The most pessimistic among of Christians, believe that the end of the world is near and Jesus about to return, but what if The Messiah is already here? In this documentary-series we will meet four people who claim they are the Messiah.

Most of you are familiar with the prophecy of the Bible; promising the return of God's son. Many of us, religious or not, have therefore toyed with the idea:

"What if Jesus were alive, here, on earth, today?" What would he think of the current state of our world? What would he have looked like? And who would believe in him (or her) today?

Through the series, we follow Jonas Bendiksen, the only Norwegian ever granted membership in Magnum – the world's most prestigious photo agency.

All his life Jonas Bendiksen has explored life through his camera lens – and a few years back, he got word of a parking attendant, who had started his own religious community Siberia. Today his congregation counts 6000 followers, living in the same city, where they worship a Jesus figure known by the name Vissarion. Hearing this and other, similar Jesus-stories, Jonas became so curious about the phenomenon that he decided to travel the world, visiting various characters who call themselves Jesus – Messiah.

But who are these men, each claiming to be God's only son? Who are the people who follow them? Do they have anything important to relate to us, or are they simply mad? And, is it any more peculiar that a parking warden from Siberia should be the Son of God, than a carpenter from Nazareth?

In the process of documenting, Jonas Bendiksen lives as close to the Jesus'es as possible.

We follow Bendiksen from the frozen tundra of Siberia, to the sizzling heat of the South African countryside, via Tokyo's neon jungle, onwards to Jesus in Brazil who makes music videos to save the world.

Through meetings with these contemporary Messiahs in Japan, South Africa, Russia and Brazil, we wish to contribute food for thought to the important questions of faith and religion, as well as shedding light on man's search for meaning in life - and the constant need for connections and belonging. At first glance, we might only see people who have gone to extremes, but at closer scrutiny, there might well be something universally human in their longings and quest for meaning.

Messiah – a documentary series still work in progress. At the moment we are editing four episodes each episode being 40 min. We will also shape a narrative with all four stories into an hour long documentary.
